Climate Change Resiliency Committee backs 13.5-foot culvert over 9.5-foot option.

Climate Change Resiliency Committee · Meeting of May 13, 2026

WEST NEWBURY — The Climate Change Resiliency Committee discussed a revised farm field culvert design favoring a 13.5-foot crossing over the earlier 9.5-foot option. Dexter Regional consultant Georgeann Keer, via Zoom, explained the larger design better controls high-velocity outflow and allows shorter flood residence times. Chair Elizabeth Callahan reported she presented the River Road project to the Merrimack River Roundtable and made contacts with the Nature Conservancy and Community Boating in Lawrence regarding living shoreline opportunities.

Nancy Pau will reconvene the Living Shoreline Technical Committee with an initial project location available on River Road. The committee also identified governance structure needs including a staff point of contact and project manager or grant administrator position as the town prepares to hire a new town manager.
